Okay everyone, we are looking at building a new house this year, and I need some help! I have been looking at floor plans until my eyes are crossed, my head is pounding and I am leaking square footage out my ears. Unfortunatly, none of the plans have exactly what we want, how we want it. Yes, I am being picky because I want this to be the house we retire in (hopefully).
I would like anyone's input who would care to put in. The poll questions are:
1. What do you love about your house?
2. What would you change?
3. What other features would you like to have?
Thank you for any input you may wish to give!

In my house I have a little linen closet and a very little coat closet, Sooo annoying! I would also like more storage in my laundry room area, and more of a mudroom right off the garage. Good luck!
Ok so we have never owned a house, but I still have some thoughts anyway. Are you looking at multi-level floorplans or single-level? I would at least consider single-level if you are planning to retire there, since a lot of retired people don't do so well with stairs. Also, if you do have a multi-level house, see if you can put the laundry room upstairs where all the laundry actually accumulates. Is that really so crazy of an idea? Keep us updated on how it goes!
OK, get out a pencil. This is going to be life changing. Seriously, Moroni in your bedroom stuff.
First, go with a single level, even if it means your living room is, technically, in your neighbor's driveway. My experience has been, whatever I need, it's on the floor I'm not.
Second, build a laundry room the size of Peru. With miles of counter space, drawers, and tall cupboards with clothes-hanging poles. Make space for a TV, your laptop, maybe a microwave and a smoothie blender. This room should also probably include a washer and dryer.
Third, make your kids' bedrooms small. As they get older they will trash them so thoroughly you'll need commercial excavation teams to dig them out. Do yourself a favor and limit the floorspace.
Make your bedroom enormous. You'll want to have a place where, if necessary, you can hide out during your daughter's PMS week. Use the same technology Jodie Foster used in "Safe Room" for the door. I'm serious about this.
Construct your kids' bathroom entirely of Legos. Install a fire hose and decontamination shower.
No carpet anywhere. Cardboard flooring while the kids are still at home, hard wood flooring once they're grown and gone.
I'm sorry, Brooke. This is too long. But I care so very much about you that I want this to be the perfect house for your golden years! Let me know how that Lego thing works out...
I love the legos! Unfortunately, I don't think a bathroom built out of legos comes standard with our builder. Maybe we will have to pay for the upgrade. The decontamination shower is a must!
I am surprised that you forgot the LazyBoy recliner for the laundry room.
If you plan to retire in it make sure there are very few if any stairs. We would plan to retire in this one, but our knees may not take it as we enter the golden years.
Make sure your laundry room is not a walk-through to the garage and has counter space and cupboards. A big utility sink would be nice too.
I love the huge deck we have. I love the walk out basement. I love the 3 car garage.
My favorite thing in my kitchen is the microwave above the range. I really want a double oven with one being a convection.
Laundry room upstairs with all the bedrooms would be a plus too.
I hope you don't move too soon. We will miss you.
Great suggestions guys. We don't have and never will have a multilevel. Deciding between 2 story and rambler has come down to finding a floor plan we like. My biggest issues are more storage space, a nice laundry room that does not also include the furnace and water heater, I would like a mud room with something like lockers for kids to keep coats etc, and a guest bath (Hello, I have two young boys. No matter how often I clean, I don't want to invite anyone to use that bathroom!)
Unfortunately, homes with big laundry and mudroom are also HUGE with a HUGE pricetag. We are going to have to see how we can push a wall on a smaller plan or something. Sounds like something superhuman eh?
I've been thinking about all of the awesome things I want in my house someday (I have a hook-up with a budding young architect, who happens to be very handsome.)
So here we go.
-You need lots of secret passageways.
-A fire pole.
-Saddles made into bar stools.
-A room where the walls and floor are composed of nothing but trampolines, connected to a room that is a giant ball pit.
-And last but not least I have always been jealous of Laurie and Lance's drinking fountain.
I hope this helps!
My house is a small ranch. I love that everything is on one floor & I like not having a lot of space to clean, heat & cool. I love having a laundry/mud room as our main entrance to cut down on clutter & dirt.
I would like more built in storage space(wouldn't everyone!). Make sure have plenty of lighting & outlets both inside & out too. I would put in more than you think you'll need. HTH Jen
